Günter Neumann kam nach ersten Engagements in Potsdam und Weimar 1969 an die Komische Oper Berlin und wurde Felsensteins Don Jose. Seitdem gestaltete er 44 Rollen und stand durchschnittlich 84 Mal im Jahr auf dieser Bühne, die seine künstlerische Heimat war und mit deren Zielen, dem realistischen Musiktheater, er sich völlig identifizierte. Gastspiele führten ihn an alle bedeutenden Opernhäuser. Er wirkte an zahlreichen Schallplatten-, Rundfunk- und Fernsehproduktionen mit. Zu seinen herausragenden Rollen zählen der Tannhäuser in Hamburg und Wien sowie der Herodes in Amsterdam, Köln und Hamburg und der Aaron in Dresden und Berlin. Neuerdings widmet sich Günter Neumann nur noch dem Charakterfach. 2003 gab er sein Regiedebüt.
Unter anderem als Gabriel von Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus und Feri in der Csárdásfürstin ist Günter Neumann in der Spielzeit 2004/05 an der Komischen Oper Berlin zu erleben.
