The Buchla Suite: A Handcrafted Tribute to Morton Subotnick ist das neueste Projekt und Klangexperiment des Stefan Schultze’s Large Ensembles. Das Projekt wurde von Morton Subotnicks bahnbrechender Komposition Silver Apples of the Moon inspiriert, die 1967 bei Nonesuch Records veröffentlicht wurde. Das Stück wurde für den Buchla-100-Synthesizer geschrieben, den Subotnick in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Ingenieur Don Buchla entwickelt hatte. Die Einführung dieses Instruments und Subotnicks Kompositionen, in denen er es einsetzte, begründeten das, was heute als West-Coast-Stil der Klangsynthese gilt. Seine Arbeit hat Generationen von elektronischen und elektroakustischen Musiker*innen nachhaltig beeinflusst.

The Buchla Suite nähert sich der Frage an, in wie weit ein komplettes Ensemble die Funktionalität eines Synthesizers umsetzen könnte, d.h. was es bedeuten würde, die Logik eines Oszillators, eines Sequenzers, eines Filters oder eines Chaosgenerators auf den Kompositionsprozess anzuwenden. Obwohl die Suite Silver Apples of the Moon als Prüfstein und Ausgangspunkt verwendet, handelt es sich nicht um eine Eins-zu-eins-Übersetzung von Subotnicks Werk oder um das Ergebnis eines Akts der Übertragung von Elektronik in ein akustisches Idiom. Was Schultze viel mehr interessiert als ein fixer ästhetischer Vorschlag ist die Schaffung einer Sprache, die genutzt werden kann, um noch nie dagewesene Ergebnisse zu erzielen.

Das Stefan Schultze’s Large Ensembles entstand aus der Idee einer ständigen Erweiterung der ästhetischen und organisatorischen Prinzipien einer großen Ensembleformation. Dazu kommt der unstillbarer Drang, elegante Klangartefakte zu produzieren. Das Ensemble besteht aus einer wechselnden Besetzung hochspezialisierter Instrumentalist*innen, alle mit einer einzigartigen Stimme und einem idiosynkratischen Zugang zu ihren jeweiligen Instrumenen.

The Buchla Suite: A Handcrafted Tribute to Morton Subotnick is the latest project and sound-exploration vehicle for Stefan Schultze’s Large Ensemble. The project was inspired by Morton Subotnick’s seminal composition Silver Apples of the Moon , which was released in 1967 on Nonesuch Records. The piece was written for the Buchla-100 synthesizer, which Subotnick designed in collaboration with engineer Don Buchla. The introduction of this instrument, and Subotnick’s compositions which utilised it, defined what is now considered the West-Coast style of sound synthesis. His work has had a lasting impact on generations of electronic and electroacoustic musicians.

The Buchla Suite is an investigation into how a full ensemble might implement the functionality of a synthesizer, i.e., what it would mean to apply the logic of an oscillator, a sequencer, a f ilter, or chaos generator to the compositional process. Although the suite uses Silver Apples of the Moon as a touchstone and starting point, it is not a one-to-one translation of Subotnick’s opus or the result of an act of transposing electronics into an acoustic idiom. What Schultze is much more interested in than a fixed aesthetic proposition is the creation of a language that can be utilised to unlock unprecedented outcomes.

Stefan Schultze’s Large Ensemble was founded around the idea of a perpetual expansion of the aesthetic and organisational principles governing a large ensemble formation. That, and an insatiable drive to produce elegantly craf ted sonic artefacts. The outfit consists of a rotating cast of highly specialised instrumentalists, each with a unique voice and an idiosyncratic approach to their instrument.
