With Refuge, the Swiss trio Mundus builds a solid modernist architecture, but with windows left open, somewhere between contemporary jazz, groove and distant echoes of hip-hop. At the helm: Victor Decamp (trombone and electronic effects), Fabien Ghirotto (drums) and Quentin Préver (Hammond organ).
Behind the word Refuge, there's this tension: that of a hostile, rough outside, and an inside where you can breathe, a soft shelter, vibrating with warmth. What does it really mean to feel at home? Victor Decamp weaves a personal answer here, delving into the memory of places, beloved faces, journeys and memories.
The trio's sound is unrivaled. Fabien Ghirotto's drums slice through time to enclose the groove. Then there's a keyboard that expands the space, a Hammond that pulses and shimmers under Quentin Prever's hands, a desacralized organ whose feet still seem to be planted in a distant blues. Finally, the great human breath, lyrical murmur or polyphonic fanfare, trap bass or urgent outbursts: the spirit of the place. That of trombonist Victor Decamp, an obvious talent as a composer, now at the forefront of this contemporary jazz territory on the edge of pop and hip-hop.
