Damals, als man sich noch Briefe schrieb, Demo-CDs oder Faxe schickte, oder einfach nur telefonierte, rief mich Marino Pliakas, Mitglied des Trios Steamboat Switzerland, an und fragte, ob ich die CD, die er mir geschickt hatte, schon gehört hätte. „Habe ich noch nicht, aber Steamboat, das klingt für mich eher nach Dixieland-Jazz und dafür ist das LOFT nicht der richtige Ort“, war meine Antwort. Wer die Musik von Steamboat Switzerland kennt, bemerkt, wie gnadenlos falsch ich lag, also hörte ich die CD, war begeistert, und so fand am 29. November 1999 das erste Konzert dieses Schweizer Trios bei uns im LOFT statt – der Beginn einer jahrelangen fruchtbaren Zusammenarbeit, denn hierdurch ergaben sich immer mehr Kontakte zu Musiker*innen der Schweizer Szene, was sicher auch daran lag, dass z.B. Nils Wogram oder Gerry Hemingway, und viele andere Musiker*innen mittlerweile in der Schweiz arbeiteten. Und wenn man in einer Szene bekannt werden will, muss man Freunde haben – so wurde durch die Zusammenarbeit mit Steamboat-Drummer und Kommunikationsgenie Lucas Niggli das LOFT auch in der Schweiz bekannt.

Die 1995 gegründete Hardcore-Metal-/New-Music-/Improvisationsrockband ist nach wie vor eines der wildesten, frischesten und radikalsten Bandprojekte überhaupt. Die Musik dieses Hammond-Avantcore-Trios bewegt sich zwischen Improvisation und Komposition und umfasst viele Stilrichtungen. Ihre erstaunlichen Klänge lassen sich kaum kategorisieren. Das Trio ist weltweit aufgetreten, von Squats bis hin zu einer Vielzahl von Festivals, darunter die Donaueschinger Musiktage, das Lucerne Festival, das Moers Festival, Patti Smiths London Meltdown Festival, MaerzMusik Berlin usw. In improvisierten Passagen verborgen sind komponierte Module von ausgewählten Komponisten wie Felix Profos, Sam Hayden, Stephan Wittwer oder Michael Wertmüller. Dominik Blum dekonstruiert den nostalgischen Klang seiner Hammondorgel, Marino Pliakas liefert kraftvolle Riffs auf dem E-Bass und Lucas Niggli gleitet durch die schnellsten und kniffligsten Polyrhythmen auf dem Schlagzeug und erweitert damit die Grenzen der Spielbarkeit.

Stark verdichtetes Kondensat, wunderschöne, komplexe Wall Of Sounds werden da unter Hochdruck gebraut und am Puls der Zeit positioniert, indem es die Grenzziehungen zwischen den ohnedies schon längst hinfälligen Gegensatzpaaren E- und U, Komposition und Improvisation negiert und aktuellen soziokulturellen bzw. – musikalischen Phänomenen in der Begegnung von Avantgarde und Underground Klang verleiht.
Im Rahmen ihres bewährten Konzepts multiidiomatischer Module in Interaktion mit improvisierten Texturen bieten Steamboat Switzerland on stage ein Tagesangebot aus Instant Composing und diversem, z.g.T. dem Trio gewidmetem Material. Über das Repertoire wird in Realtime auf der Bühne entschieden.
Steamboat Switzerland – ein starker Dampfer, der seinen Namen von Adolf Wölflis „Dampfer Swizerland“ bezieht. In Wölflis epischem Gedicht „Von der Wiege bis ins Graab“ fährt der Dampfer Swizerland den Rhein hinunter; dabei geht jedes Land, durch das er kommt, unter, nur er selbst bleibt übrig …




Die Konzerte im LOFT beginnen in der Regel gegen 20 Uhr - das LOFT öffnet jeweils um 19.30 Uhr.
Ausnahmen in der Winterzeit - zB an Sonntagen - sind möglich.

Founded in 1995, the hardcore metal/new music/improvised rock band are still one of the wildest, freshest and most radical band projects around. Occupying a space between improvisation and composition, the music of this Hammond Avantcore Trio embraces many idioms. Its amazing sounds defy categorization. The trio has performed everywhere around the world from squats to a broad range of festivals including the Donaueschinger Musiktage, Lucerne Festival, Moers Festival, Patti Smith’s London Meltdown Festival, MaerzMusik Berlin etc.etc. Buried in improvised passages are composed modules by selected composers such as Felix Profos, Sam Hayden, Stephan Wittwer, or Michael Wertmüller. Steamboat Switzerland—a powerful steamboat that takes its name from Adolf Wölfli’s “Dampfer Swizerland.” In Wölfli’s epic poem “Von der Wiege bis ins Graab” (From the Cradle to the Grave), the steamboat Swizerland travels down the Rhine; every country it passes through is destroyed, only the steamboat itself remains…



The concerts at the LOFT will generally start at around 8.00 pm CEST - the LOFT will open at 7.30 pm CEST.
