Work In Progress

Synopsis

In an emblematic working-class neighboorhood threatened by an Urban Reformation Plan, the construction of a block of flats is undertaken.
We wanted to delve into the interiorities of a work in progress; so we moved there when the area was still an empty lot where the youngsters played football. We searched the way to live together, get to know and shoot - yes, in this order - so that we could tackle both the stories inherent in the building work and those generated by its impact on the day-to-day life of the area residents (in fact the image of the neighbourhood took shape as a handful of faces which in our eyes represented it). Along this process, we soon realized that the changes in the urban landscape also affect human landscape and that in this motion certain echoes of the world could be recognised.
Over these foundations, we built a film.

Biographie

Born in Barcelona in 1960.
After directing several experimental films, such as La Agonfa de Agustin (1975), Furvus (1975), Elogio de las musas (1977), El orificio de la luz (1977) and La dramatica pubertad de Alicia (1978), Guerin eventually released Memorias de un paisaje in 1999.
His first 35 mm feature film, Los motivos de Berta, was highly acclaimed by the critics and thus overcame the bureaucratic barriers that were impeding its theatrical release. Present at the festivals in Rotterdam, Berlin and Locarno, it was chosen as the best film of the year by the Spanish Film Federation and received the Sant Jordi Award.
Next he directed Eulalia Marta (1988), a Barcelona episode of the collective picture City Life, with the participation of several well-known directors -Kieslowski, Mirnal Sen and Alejandro Agresti.
In 1990's Innisfree - which featured at that year's Cannes - co-produced with La Sept, Guerin revisited the people and spots of the Irish village where John Ford's Quiet Man was shot. The film, considered a classic documentary, received the main awards of the Spanish cinema.
With Tren de sombras (Le spectre de Le Thuit) (1996), Guerin participated in the Director's Fortnight of the Cannes Film Festival in 1997, and was awarded the Critics Prize at the Sitges International Film Festival and the Prize for the Best Film at the Film Festivals of Orense and Alcala de Henares.
His last film, En construcciön (Work in Progress), was premiered in the 2001 San Sebastian International Film Festival where it received the Special Jury Award, the FIPRESCI Award and the Spanish Film Writers' Guild Award. The film also got the GOYA Award 2001 to the Best Documentary Film, "Fotogramas de Plata" and Sant Jordi Award to the Best Spanish Film of 2001 and a Certificate of Merit of the Golden Gate Awards at the 2002 San Francisco International film Festival. The film was included in the Variety Critic's Choice Section of the Karlovy Vary Film Festival. Additionally, Jose Luis Guerin was awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Culture with the 2001 National Award of Cinematography.
