Biographie

Born in Uppsala in 1965, Ella Lemhagen moved to Stockholm after finishing school. She studied Film History at Stockholm University and simultaneously started working hands-on with film.

In 1986 Lemhagen was commissioned to direct the short film TACK FÖR DEN TIDEN SOM VAR from her own script by the youth division of Swedish Television. She studied for one term at a film school in Paris that specialized in documentaries in that same year.

In 1989 Lemhagen entered the Dramatical Institute's course for directors. It was during this three year period that she tried to find new working structures with actors. The goal was that through discussions of the script and improvisations, the actors could take a more active part in the project.

After completing her exams in 1991, Lemhagen started a collaboration with the mime artist Äsa Johannison that went by the name "Film- och Teaterprojektet Pä Väg"

The year after, Lemhagen was chosen to represent young cultural figures at the World Fair in Seville.
In 1994, 13-ÄRSDAGEN, a film by Lemhagen from her own screenplay, premiered at the Göteborg Film Festival where it won the Audience Prize for Best Short Film.

Lemhagen made her debut as a feature film director in 1996 with the highly praised DRÖMPRINSEN – FILMEN ON EM (also original screenplay), which was nominated for a Guldbagge (Swedish academy award) for Best Director and also nominated for the Norwegian Amanda prize for Best Nordic Film.

The feature film VÄLKOMMEN TILL FESTEN (also original screenplay) followed the year after. TSATSIKI, MUM AND THE POLICEMAN is Lemhagen's third feature film.
