Der Regisseur und Musiker Ludger Engels wurde neben seinen Opern- und Schauspielproduktionen besonders durch interdisziplinäre und raumübergreifende Projekte international bekannt, u. a. die Uraufführung von »Alzheim« für Schauspieler und Sänger, das Raum-Klang-Projekt »Tempi Agitati«, die Theaterinstallation »Aachen Musicircus on Europeras 1–5« (John Cage), das Camus-Projekt »Terror.Revolte.Glück.« (in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Ludwigforum für internationale Kunst Aachen), »Tomorrow maybe, Überleben in Diktaturen« in Phnom Phen/Kambodscha und Aachen, »Chorus« mit 400 Sänger*innen und das Musiktheater »Semele Walk« nach Händel in der Couture von Vivienne Westwood. Seine letzten Arbeiten sind die Uraufführung »Apeiron« von Anja Hilling im Schauspiel Bonn, die Schweizer Erstaufführung der Oper »Kròl Roger«, die Videoinstallation »The Journey«, die Uraufführung »Die Vorübergehenden« an der Bayerischen Staatsoper in München und das Musiktheater »Returning Home« nach Monterverdis »Ulisse« im Dialog mit alter koreanischer Musik für das Tongyeong International Music Festival Korea und Radialsystem Berlin. Weitere Inszenierungen, Projekte und Installationen entstanden für Opern, Theater, Festivals und Museen u.a. in Aachen, Freiburg, Berlin, Hannover, München, Stuttgart, Augsburg, in der Schweiz, in Sydney, Tongyeong/Korea, San Diego/USA, Budapest/Ungarische Staatsoper, der Pinakothek der Moderne in München und dem Reiss-Engelhorn Museum in Mannheim. Ludger Engels war bis 2013 Chefregisseur und stellvertretender Intendant am Theater Aachen. Seit 2015 arbeitet er als Studiengangsleiter und Professor für Regie an der Akademie für Darstellende Kunst Baden-Württemberg, wo er seit April 2022 Künstlerischer Direktor und Geschäftsführer ist. Zuletzt hat er am Badischen Staatstheater Karlsruhe Wagners "Der fliegende Holländer" inszeniert.
