Das Ensemble Modern gehört zu den führenden Ensembles für neue Musik weltweit. Es ist regelmäßig zu Gast bei europäischen Festivals und Spielstätten, z. B. bei den Berliner Festspielen, den Bregenzer Festspielen, der Cité de la Musique, dem Concertgebouw Amsterdam und dem Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, bei Wien Modern oder der Wigmore Hall London. Durchschnittlich 70 Werke jährlich führt das Ensemble Modern auf, von Musiktheater-, Tanz- und Videoproduktionen bis hin zu Kammermusik, Ensemble- und Orchesterkonzerten, darunter etwa 20 Uraufführungen. Über viele Jahre sind intensive Zusammenarbeiten mit Komponist*innen entstanden, u. a. mit John Adams, Mark Andre, George Benjamin, Peter Eötvös, Brian Ferneyhough, Heiner Goebbels, Hans Werner Henze, Mauricio Kagel, György Kurtág, Helmut Lachenmann, György Ligeti, Olga Neuwirth, Enno Poppe, Rebecca Saunders, Simon Steen-Andersen, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Steve Reich, Frank Zappa oder Vito Žuraj.
