Er gründete und leitete das Festival Tanztheater International Hannover. Von 1986 bis 2000 war er künstlerischer Leiter und Geschäftsführer des Internationalen Sommertheater Festivals Hamburg. 1994-97 kuratierte er darüber hinaus das Carlton-Dance-Festival in Rio de Janeiro und São Paulo. Von 2000 – 2002 war er Generalsekretär der Aarhus Fest-Wochen Dänemark. Anschließend wurde er Beauftragter des Vorstands der Europäischen Werkstatt für Kunst und Kultur Hellerau e.V. Dresden sowie Koordinator des Projekts „Kultur der Favelas” im Auftrage des Goethe Instituts Rio de Janeiro. 2003 war er Kurator für Lateinamerika der H. C. Andersen Stiftung Dänemark und 2004 Senior Advisor for Cultural Programs and International Relations von World Culture Open New York. 2003 wurde er Direktor des „Fórum Cultural Mundial“ – World Culture Forum“. Seit 2009 ist er künstlerischer Leiter des Europäischen Zentrums der Künste HELLERAU Dresden.

After completing a bank apprenticeship, Dieter Jaenicke studied pedagogy, sociology, theatre pedagogy and religious studies. He founded and directed the festival Tanztheater International Hannover. From 1986 to 2000 he was the artistic director and manager of the Internationale Sommertheater Festival Hamburg. From 1994-97 he additionally curated the Carlton Dance Festival in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. From 2000–2002 he was secretary general of the Aarhus Festive Weeks, Denmark. He then became the representative of the board of the Europäische Werkstatt für Kunst und Kultur Hellerau e.V. Dresden, as well as coordinator of the project "Culture of the Favelas" commissioned by the Goethe Institute Rio de Janeiro. In 2003 he was the Latin America curator at the H. C. Andersen Foundation Denmark and in 2004 Senior Advisor for Cultural Programs and International Relations of World Culture Open New York. In 2003 he became the director of the "Fórum Cultural Mundial – World Culture Forum". Since 1999,he has been the artistic director of the Europäische Zentrum der Künste HELLERAU Dresden.
