What is worth living and dying for – love, art, freedom? This question lies at the heart of Tosca, uniquely blending musical brilliance with a gripping plot and historical events with archetypes of the operatic stage. Throughout a single fateful night, the audience follows the story of the singer Floria Tosca, the painter Mario Cavaradossi and the unscrupulous police chief Scarpia, a night that ends fatally for all three. The greatest stars of opera history have graced Boleslaw Barlog’s historically accurate production for over 50 years. Paolo Carignani returns to the podium for the performances in April and June, whilst the Russian soprano Elena Guseva shines in the title role, having made her appearance here as recently as November, playing Lisa in The Queen of Spades. Following his acclaimed house debut as Don Alvaro in La forza del destino, Luciano Ganci returns to Bismarckstraße as Mario Cavaradossi for the April performances; in June, Najmiddin Mavlyanov will take on the role of the rebellious painter. Vladislav Sulimsky and Pavel Yankovsky round off the cast as Scarpia.
