Tenor
studierte Gesang und Kirchenmusik in Karlsruhe und Düsseldorf. 1985 führte ihn sein erster Vertrag an das Züricher Opernhaus, worauf er dann 1987 als Ensemblemitglied an der Rheinoper Düsseldorf-Duisburg arbeitete und seit 1993 freischaffend tätig ist. Der lyrische Tenor gastierte daraufhin an zahlreichen Opernhäusern u.a. in München, Dresden, Venedig, Barcelona, Madrid und Lyon. Sein großes Repertoire umfasst Partien wie die des Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte, des Fenton in Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor, des Ottavio in Don Giovanni und des Rosillon in Die lustige Witwe. Markus Schäfer erhielt u.a. den Grammy für best choral performance für seine Interpretation der Matthäus-Passion.
An der Komischen Oper Berlin singt er in der Spielzeit 2004/05 den Ottavio in Don Giovanni, den Oronte in Alcina auch den Andres in Wozzeck.

His first contract took him to the Zurich Opernhaus in 1985, whereupon he became in 1987 member of the ensemble of the Rheinoper Düsseldorf-Duisburg. Since 1993 he works as a freelancer. Thereupon the lyric tenor made guest appearances at numeorus opera houses, amongst others in Munich, Dresden, Venice, Barcelona, Madrid and Lyon. His broad repertory includes parts such as Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte, Fenton in Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor, Ottavio in Don Giovanni and Rosillon in The Merry Widow. Markus Schäfer received the Grammy for the Best Choral Performance for his interpretations of the Matthäus-Passion.
