You’re here to live your life, not to make everyone under­stand.” (Banksy) — Punk, Cineast, Tanz-Rebell: Die Liste der Labels, die Samir Akika im Laufe seines Choreografenlebens angeheftet bekommen hat, ist lang. Über manche davon kann er selbst herzlich schmunzeln, andere mögen so verkehrt nicht sein. Einig werden sich die meisten, wenn es um die Liebe zum Geschichtenerzählen geht, das tiefe Interesse an seinen Protagonist:innen und den Mut, seine künstlerische Sprache immer wieder neu zu erfinden. In seinen Arbeiten besucht Samir Akika Orte, die sich einer eindeutigen Definition entziehen, an denen das Gewohnte neu erscheint, die in geheimen Ecken zuvor Ungesehenes sichtbar machen. Stets an seiner Seite: das Ensemble von Unusual Symptoms, das diese Orte mit Leben füllt. In einer neuen Arbeit suchen Akika und die Tänzer:innen einmal mehr das Unbekannte – und machen das Geheime zum Vertrauten.

Some may evoke a joyful smirk in him while others may not actually be that far off. Most agree that there is a love for telling stories at work here, a deep interest in his protagonists as well as the courage to reinvent his artistic language time and again. In his works, Samir Akika visits spaces that defy unequivocal definition, where the usual appears new, that make that which was previously unseen visible in secret corners. Always at his side: The Unusual Symptoms ensemble, filling these spaces with life. In a new work, Akika and the dancers again search for the unknown – making the secret familiar.
