The Catalan Director Calixto Bieito, Director of the Teatre Romea in Barcelona, is regarded since the mid of the 1990ies as one of the most important Spanish directors. He became famous for his concrete and expressive language concerning classic texts, so amongst others with Horvath' s Kasimir i Karoline, Shakespeare' s El rey Juan and Calderon' s La vida es sueño. He was invited to the international theatre festivals of Edinburgh and Salzburg with Valle Inclán' s Comédias Bárbaras (2000) and Shakespeare' s Macbeth (2001). Since 1996 Calixto Bieito is directing also in the opera scope: first with Bréton' s Zarzuela La verbena de la Paloma at the Teatro Tivoli Barcelona and at the Edinburgh Festival (1996/97), in succession with Schönberg' s Pierrot Lunaire at the Teatre Lliure Barcelona (1998), with Bizet' s Carmen at the Festival Peralada (1999), with Mozarts Così fan tutte at the Welsh National Opera and last with Verdi' s Un ballo in maschera at the Gran Teatre Liceu Barcelona (2000). In 2002 he staged for the Festival Grec in Barcelona Brecht' s/Weill' s Die Dreigroschenoper (awarded with the Premio Premio Ercilio della Mejor Creación ) and in summer 2003 for the Edinburgh Festival Shakespeare' s Hamlet, which was invited to a big tour in Europe and the United States. His stagings of Don Giovanni, Il trovatore and La Traviata at the Staatsoper Hannover were discussed a lot and received a high national and international attention. The Abduction from the Seraglio was in the 2003/04 season the first staging of Calixto Bieito at the Komische Oper Berlin, in September 2005 he staged a second time: Madame Butterfly. In the season 2008/09 followed his version of Glucks »Armida«.
