Die Sopranistin studierte an der Hochschule für Musik »Hanns Eisler« Berlin. Ihr Debüt gab sie als Nuri in »Tiefland« bereits im zweiten Studienjahr. Erste Engagements folgten von 1965 bis 1969 in Magdeburg und Neustrelitz. 1969 wurde die Sängerin von Walter Felsenstein an die Komische Oper Berlin engagiert. Zu den Partien, die sie am erfolgreichsten verkörpert hat, gehören die Fleurette in »Ritter Blaubart«, Gretel, Lauretta, Marzelline, Gilda, Blondchen, Despina, Erste Dame und die Königin in »Die Verurteilung des Lukullus«. Von 1975 bis 1985 war sie ständiger Gast an der Semperoper Dresden und der Oper Leipzig. Neben zahlreichen Rundfunk- und TV-Opernproduktionen feierte die Sängerin auch große Erfolge im Konzert- und Liedgesang. 1982 wurde Barbara Sternberger zur Kammersängerin ernannt. In vergangenen Spielzeiten sang die Sopranistin an der Komischen Oper Berlin u. a. die Frau des Dorfrichters in »Jenufa«, die Giovanna in »Rigoletto« und die Bäckerin in »Das Märchen vom Zaren Saltan«. In der Spielzeit 2006/07 wird sie weiterhin als Annina in »La Traviata«, als Anhilte in »Die Csárdásfürstin« und als Amme in »Die Prinzessin auf der Erbse« sowie als Exzellenz Hardegg in der Neuproduktion »Das Land des Lächelns« zu erleben sein.

Her most successful parts include Fleurette in »Bluebeard«, Gretel, Lauretta, Marzelline, Gilda, Blondchen, Despina, First Lady and the Queen in »The Trial of Lukullus«. From 1975 to 1985 she was a permanent guest at the Dresden Semperoper and the Leipzig Opera. Beside numerous Radio- and TV-opera productions, the singer received as well unanimous acclaim as concert and song singer. In 1982 Barbara Sternberger was appointed as »Chamber Singer«. In the 2003/04 season the soprano sang at the Komische Oper Berlin amongst others the Wife of the Village Judge in Jenufa, Giovanna in »Rigoletto« and the Baker' s Wife in »The Tale of Tsar Saltan«. In the 2006/07 season she will further be seen as Annina in »La Traviata«, as Anhilte in »The Gipsy Princess« and as Amme in »The Princess and the Pea«. Moreover, the part of the Excellency Hardegg in the new production »Country of Smile« will be added to her repertory.
