Der Bühnenbildner Zinovy Margolin wurde in Weißrussland geboren. Für sein Bühnendesign von Janáceks JENUFA und LES PARAPLUIES DE CHERBOURG, dem Musical nach dem Musicalfilm von Jacques Demy, wurde er mit der „Goldenen Maske“ ausgezeichnet. Regelmäßig arbeitet er mit Regisseur Vasily Barkhatov zusammen und gemeinsam brachten sie Produktionen wie Offenbachs LES CONTES D’HOFFMANN, Verdis LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST, Gounods FAUST, Dvoráks RUSALKA und u. a. Tschaikowskijs EUGEN ONEGIN, Berlioz‘ LA DAMNATION DE FAUST in Mannheim sowie Mussorgskis CHOWANSCHTSCHINA, Prokofjews DER SPIELER und Puccinis MADAMA BUTTERFLY in Basel auf die Bühne. Am Mariinski und Bolshoi Theater waren seine Bühnenbilder bei einer Vielzahl an Produktionen zu sehen, darunter Werke wie Wagners TRISTAN UND ISOLDE, Schostakowitschs DIE NASE, Mozarts LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, Rossinis IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA und u. a. Verdis OTELLO. Am Hessischen Staatstheater Wiesbaden entwarf er in der Saison 2015/2016 ein spektakuläres Raumkonzept für die Neuinszenierung DIE SOLDATEN von Bernd Alois Zimmermann, 2016/17 entstand dort in Koproduktion mit der Königlichen Oper Stockholm auch die Bühne zu EUGEN ONEGIN. An der Deutschen Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf entwarft Zinovy Margolin in der Saison 2022/23 den Bühnenraum für Wagners DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER.
Für die Uraufführung von Aribert Reimanns Oper L’ INVISIBLE wurde er an die Deutsche Oper Berlin engagiert, wo er im Jahr 2023 erneut für die szenische Umsetzung von Verdis SIMON BOCCANEGRA zu Gast ist.
