Seine Ausbildung wurde durch Meisterkurse bei Elisabeth Schwarzkopf und Hans Hotter ergänzt. 1994 gewann er den Alexander Girardi-Wettbewerb in Coburg.
Von 1993 bis 1996 gehörte er dem Ensemble der Oper Köln an, ab 1996 war er Mitglied des Ensembles der Niedersächsischen Staatsoper. Hier trat er u.a. als Cassandro / LA FINTA GIARDINIERA, als Guglielmo / COSI FAN TUTTE und als Papageno / DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE auf.
Internationale Gastspiele führten ihn nach Berlin, Leipzig, München, Rom, Paris, Athen, London, Festival in Orange und ermöglichten die Zusammenarbeit mit Dirigenten wie Giuseppe Sinopoli, Marek Janowski und Christian Thielemann. Erste erfolgreiche Ausflüge ins Tenorfach unternahm Will Hartmann im Sommer 1998 mit seinem Debüt am Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London als Da-Du in Strauss’ DIE ÄGYPTISCHE HELENA in konzertanten Aufführungen unter Christian Thielemann. Es folgten rasch Debüts in den Hauptpartien des neuen Fachs: Tamino / DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE und Hans / DIE VERKAUFTE BRAUT waren darunter.
In jüngerer Zeit interpretierte er u. a. Max / FREISCHÜTZ in Stuttgart, Danilo / DIE LUSTIGE WITWE in Mailand, Düsseldorf und Duisburg, Melot / TRISTAN UND ISOLDE in Mailand, Florestan / FIDELIO an der Komischen Oper Berlin, Don Jose / CARMEN in Basel und Stuttgart, Fritz / DER FERNE KLANG in Strasbourg, Siegmund / WALKÜRE in Genf, Maler und Neger / LULU in London, Madrid und Barcelona, Pelleas / PELLEAS UND MELISANDE sowie Laca / JENUFA an der Deutschen Oper Berlin und Narraboth / SALOME am Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London.
