Engagements führten ihn an das Theater Freiburg, das Schauspiel Leipzig, das Schauspiel Frankfurt und das Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus. Er arbeitete mit Regisseuren wie Karin Henkel, Jorinde Dröse, Wolfgang Engel, Boris von Poser, Florian Fiedler und Christopher Rüping zusammen. Zu seinen Rollen zählten u. a. Marquis von Posa in Don Karlos (Regie Wolfgang Engel), Jason in Das goldene Vlies (Regie Robert Schuster), Orsino in Was ihr wollt (Regie Jorinde Dröse) sowie die Titelrolle in Dantons Tod (Regie Ulrich Rasche). Außerdem arbeitet Torben Kessler als Hörbuchsprecher. 2016 war er für den Deutschen Hörbuchpreis nominiert. Seine gemeinsam mit Klaus Gehre und Micha Lohmann konzipierten Live-Video-Performances, wie die Wolf-Haas-Adaptionen Komm, süßer Tod und Silentium, wurden u. a. nach Leipzig, Hamburg, Berlin, Heidelberg und Frankfurt eingeladen. Ab der Spielzeit 2016/17 war Torben Kessler Ensemblemitglied des Düsseldorfer Schauspielhauses. Er ist Hörbuchsprecher zahlreicher Romane, u. a. von Hanya Yanagihara und Donna Tart und war zuletzt im Kinofilm Eingeschlossene Gesellschaft (Sönke Wortmann 2022) zu sehen.
Seit der Spielzeit 2019/20 ist Torben Kessler Ensemblemitglied des Schauspiel Hannover und spielt u. a. in Goethes Faust – allerdings mit anderem Text und auch anderer Melodie und Hamlet.
