Titus Engel studierte Musikwissenschaft und Philosophie in seiner Geburtsstadt Zürich und in Berlin. Er erlernte sein Dirigierhandwerk in Dresden bei Christian Kluttig und wurde durch das Dirigentenforum des Deutschen Musikrats gefördert. 2000 gab er sein Operndebüt mit der Uraufführung von Benjamin Schweitzers JAKOB VON GUNTEN in Dresden. Seitdem leitete er u. a. Alban Bergs WOZZECK und Béla Bartóks HERZOG BLAUBARTS BURG (Oper Stuttgart), Jacques Offenbachs FANTASIO (Komische Oper Berlin), Telemanns ORPHEUS und Wolfgang Amadeus Mozarts „Betulia liberata“ (Oper Frankfurt), Engelbert Humperdincks HÄNSEL UND GRETEL (Hamburgische Staatsoper), Philip Glass’ AKHNATEN (Opera Vlaanderen Antwerpen / Gent) und Giuseppe Verdis LA TRAVIATA (Theater Basel).
Darüber hinaus dirigierte er zahlreiche Uraufführungen (Sergej Newski, Leo Dick, Olga Neuwirth, Michael Wertmüller, Rebecca Saunders, Bernhard Gander) bei den Salzburger Festspielen, den Berliner Festspielen, dem Lucerne Festival sowie am Wiener Konzerthaus. Vom Magazin Opernwelt wurde er als Dirigent des Jahres 2020 ausgezeichnet. An der Bayerischen Staatsoper übernahm er in der Spielzeit 2021/22 die musikalische Leitung der Neuproduktionen von BLUTHAUS und GIUDITTA.
Mit der BigBand der Deutschen Oper Berlin führte er im September 2022 Charles Mingus‘ Opus magnum „Epitaph“ in der Berliner Philharmonie auf, das auch von rbb Kultur ausgestrahlt worden ist.
Im kommenden Jahr wird er Chefdirigent der Basel Sinfonietta.
