Tabea Braun hat an der HAW Hamburg Kostümbild studiert. Bereits während des Studiums hat sie Kostüme für Filme von Christoph Schlingensief entworfen. Mit ihm zusammen ist sie Anfang der 1990er an die Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz gegangen, wo sie bis heute regelmässig arbeitet.
Mit René Pollesch arbeitet sie seit 1999 für zahlreiche Produktionen zusammen. In Hamburg waren folgende gemeinsame Arbeiten zu sehen: www-slums, Mädchen in Uniform und Neues vom Dauerzustand. Außerdem hat sie u.a. mit Regisseuren wie Frank Castorf, Stefan Pucher, Sebastian Baumgarten, Simon Stone, Schorsch Kamerun, David Marton, Luc Bondy, Peter Kern, Antu Romero Nunes, Michael Talke, Ragnar Kjartansson und Oskar Roehler gearbeitet.
Sie unterrichtete als Gastprofessorin an der Kunsthochschule Weissensee, sowie als Dozentin an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste / Maastricht und an der Akademie der Künste / München.
2015 war sie Preisträgerin des Ruhrpreis für Kunst und Wissenschaften.
Am Deutschen SchauSpielhaus gestaltet Tabea Braun die Kostüme für René Polleschs »Ich kann nicht mehr«.
