Er ist regelmäßiger Gast der English National Opera und des Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Sir John Tomlinson verfügt über ein breites Konzertrepertoire und ist mit den führenden britischen Orchestern sowie in Deutschland, Italien, Spanien, Dänemark und den USA aufgetreten. Seine Diskografie umfasst zahlreiche Opern und Konzertwerke. 2012/13 sang er neben Konzerten u. a. Hunding und Hagen sowie Birtwistles Minotaurus am Royal Opera House, Gurnemanz in München und Hagen in Wien. Engagements führen ihn u. a. ans Royal Opera House, nach Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Antwerpen und Tokio.
