Ein Schwerpunkt seiner Arbeit sind die Dramen William Shakespeares. So schuf er u.a. die Ausstattung für MACBETH, DER DIENER ZWEIER HERREN, KOMÖDIE DER IRRUNGEN für die Royal Shakespeare Company und OTELLO für das Washington Shakespeare Theatre. 1996 wurde er für KOMÖDIE DER IRRUNGEN und WEAVERS als „Designer of the Year“ (Critics Circle) ausgezeichnet, 1997 erhielt er diese Ehrung für THE WASP FACTORY und MY MOTHER SAID I NEVER SHOULD.
In New York stattete er Brechts DER AUFHALTSAME AUFSTIEG DES ARTURO UI für eine Inszenierung mit Al Pacino aus. Zu seinen Opernausstattungen gehören Arbeiten für die Minnesota Oper (PASSION), die Bregenzer Festspiele (DAS SCHLAUE FÜCHSLEIN), die Opera North (L’ELISIR D’AMORE, PARADISE MOSCOW, MANON LESCAUT), die Welsh National Opera (RIGOLETTO), die Santa Fé Opera (L’ITALIANA IN ALGERI, SIMONE BOCCANEGRA) und die Opéra du Rhin (DIE VERKAUFTE BRAUT). Außerdem stattete er eine Verfilmung von LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR aus.
Zu den Arbeiten der jüngeren Zeit zählen PETER GRIMES, BILLY BUDD und WOZZECK in Santa Fé, CARMEN in Moskau, PETER GRIMES und TRISTAN UND ISOLDE in Oslo, CHERYOMUSHKI in Leeds und Bregenz, PRINZ IGOR in Zürich, SERSE in Stockholm, LOHENGRIN in Houston und San Francisco, NABUCCO in Antwerpen und Gent sowie RIGOLETTO an der Chicago Lyric Opera.
Für die Deutsche Oper Berlin stattete er die Produktion von CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA / DER BAJAZZO aus.
