Rie Watanabe ist eine japanische Schlagzeugerin, die ihr Augenmerk auf zeitgenössische und improvisierte Musik richtet.Sie studierte Schlagwerk bei Prof. Makoto Aruga und Prof. Michiko Takahashi an der Tokyo University of the Arts und setze ihre Ausbildung bei Prof. Isao Nakamura an der Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe fort. Seit 2008 ist sie als freischaffende Künstlerin tätig. Sie arbeitet mit zahlreichen Ensembles für Neue Musik zusammen, darunter das Ensemble Musikfabrik, das Klangforum Wien, das Ensemble Resonanz und das Schlagquartett Köln. Sie arbeitete mit Komponist*innen wie Helmut Lachenmann, Nikolaus A. Huber und Oxana Pmelchuk zusammen. Gemeinsam mit Mirjam Schröder gründete sie das „Duo Vertigo“ für Schlagwerk und Harfe. An der Deutschen Oper am Rhein ist sie in der Saison 2020/21 in Diana Syrses Uraufführung „Der Kiosk“ zu erleben.
