Insgesamt schrieb er 22 Stücke, von denen er einige von der Bühne für die Leinwand bearbeitete, darunter 1977 auch „Abigails Party“. Heute zählt Leigh zu den wichtigsten Filmemachern des britischen Independent–Kinos: Für „Naked“ wurden 1993 in Cannes die Regie und der beste Schauspieler ausgezeichnet. 1996 gewann er die Goldene Palme für „Sectrets & Lies“ und wurde zudem für den Regie-Oscar nominiert. Obwohl er seine jüdische Herkunft in seiner Arbeit nie thematisierte, führt Leigh die Tendenz seiner Werke, eher Fragen zu stellen als Antworten zu geben, auf „das Jüdische“ und die darin begründete Freude, über menschliche Katastrophen gleichzeitig zu lamentieren wie zu lachen, zurück.
