Michail Jurowski wurde 1945 als Sohn des sowjetischen Komponisten Wladimir Jurowski in Moskau geboren, studierte am Moskauer Konservatorium Musikwissenschaft und Dirigieren. Von 1970 bis 1973 war er Assistent von Gennadi Roshdestwenski am Großen Sinfonieorchester des sowjetischen Rundfunks und Fernsehens. Ab 1973 wirkte Michail Jurowski als Dirigent am Moskauer Akademischen Musiktheater und betreut dort einen großen Teil des Opern- und Ballett-Repertoires. Im Mai 1999 wurde er zum Chefdirigenten der Oper Leipzig ernannt.
Eine enge künstlerische Freundschaft verband Michail Jurowski mit dem Tanztheater der Komischen Oper Berlin. Nachdem er 1978 Georg Katzers Ballett Schwarze Vögel am Moskauer Akademischen Musiktheater erstaufgeführt hatte, dirigierte er die Uraufführung des zweiten Balletts von Georg Katzer Ein neuer Sommernachtstraum 1981 an der Komischen Oper. Es folgten Dirigate der Ballette Romeo und Julia, Schwanensee, Othello und Desdemona (Musik: Gerald Humel), Die drei Musketiere (Choreographie: Flemmimg Flindt) sowie 1993 Circe und Odysseus (Musik: Gerald Humel).
Seit Beginn der Spielzeit 2001/2002 ist Michail Jurowski auch ständiger Dirigent der Deutschen Oper Berlin.
An der Komischen Oper Berlin dirigierte Michail Jurowski Die Zauberflöte, Das Märchen vom Zaren Saltan, sowie Die Liebe zu drei Orangen, Die lustige Witwe und Die Csárdásfürstin.
In der Spielzeit 2005/06 leitet Michail Jurowski musikalisch die Vorstellungen Die Liebe zu drei Orangen und die Neuproduktion Der goldene Hahn.

First engagements as a conductor took him to the Stanislawski Theatre and the Bolshoj Theatre in Moskow. Michail Jurowski is permanent Guest Conducor at the Komische Oper Berlin since 1978. Here he conducted The Magic Flute, Das Märchen vom Zaren Saltan and The Merry Widow. Since 1989 the conductor lives in Germany and works as Chief Conductor in Herford, Rostock and Leipzig. With the beginning of the 2001/02 season Michail Jurowski is engaged by the Deutsche Oper Berlin as permanent conductor.
In the 2005/06 season Michail Jurowski conducts at the Komische Oper Berlin The Love of Three Oranges and The Golden Cockerel.
