Im Anschluss daran studierte Mathias Spaan von 2016 bis 2020 Regie an der Theaterakademie Hamburg. Während des Studiums inszenierte er bereits am Jungen SchauSpielHaus Hamburg und am Landestheater Niederösterreich. Für seine dortige Inszenierung von „Die Nibelungen“ erhielt er 2020 den Nestroy-Preis in der Kategorie „Bester Nachwuchs“. Mit der Spielzeit 2021/22 wird er fester Regisseur an den Bühnen Bern. Nach „lauwarm“ und „Die unendliche Geschichte“ sind „Hitze“ und „Romeo und Julia“ seine nächsten Inszenierungen am Jungen SchauSpielHaus Hamburg
