An der Komischen Oper Berlin singt er in der Spielzeit 2004/05 den Ottavio in Don Giovanni, den Oronte in Alcina auch den Andres in Wozzeck.

Markus Schäfer studied singing and church music in Karlsruhe and Düsseldorf. His first contract took him to the Zurich Opernhaus in 1985, whereupon he became in 1987 member of the ensemble of the Rheinoper Düsseldorf-Duisburg. Since 1993 he works as a freelancer. Thereupon the lyric tenor made guest appearances at numeorus opera houses, amongst others in Munich, Dresden, Venice, Barcelona, Madrid and Lyon. His broad repertory includes parts such as Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte, Fenton in Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor, Ottavio in Don Giovanni and Rosillon in The Merry Widow. Markus Schäfer received the Grammy for the Best Choral Performance for his interpretations of the Matthäus-Passion.
