Margarethe Niebuhr wurde 1988 in Leipzig geboren und erhielt ihren ersten Violoncellounterricht im Alter von acht Jahren. Von 2003 bis 2006 war sie Jungstudentin bei Prof. Wolfgang Weber“ an der Hochschule für Musik und Theater „Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy“ in Leipzig und war mehrmalige Bundespreisträgerin bei „Jugend musiziert“. 2006 bis 2012 studierte Sie bei Prof. Peter Bruns in Leipzig und seit 2012 bei Prof. Troels Svane an der Musikhochschule Lübeck. Sie besuchte Meisterkurse bei Philippe Muller, Wolfgang-Emanuel Schmidt, László Fenyö und Michael Sanderling.
Margarethe Niebuhr war Praktikantin im Gewandhausorchester und dem Orchester des MDR und Akademistin der Staatskapelle Berlin, außerdem war sie mehrere Jahre Solo-Cellistin der Jungen Deutschen Philharmonie.
Margarethe Niebuhr ist seit Beginn der Saison 2013/2014 Mitglied der Violoncello-Gruppe im Orchester der Deutschen Oper Berlin.
