Lothar Baumgarte ist seit 1986 freischaffender Licht-Designer und Bühnenbildner in den Sparten Tanz, Oper und Schauspiel, nachdem er als Beleuchtungsmeister u. a. an den Städtischen Bühnen Erfurt (1976-1978), am Deutschen Theater Berlin (1978-1982) und am Schillertheater Berlin (1982-1986) tätig war.

Seit 1992 arbeitete er regelmäßig an der Berliner Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, hier umfassen seine Arbeiten insbesondere Inszenierungen Frank Castorfs wie z. B. DER IDIOT (Fjodor Dostojewskij), DER MEISTER UND MARGARITA (nach Michail Bulgakow), ENDSTATION AMERIKA (frei nach Tennessee Williams) und IM DICKICHT DER STÄDTE (Bertolt Brecht).
Außerdem entwarf er das Licht für Opernproduktionen in Mannheim in Zusammenarbeit mit Matthias Schönfeldt (IDOMENEO, LA CLEMENZA DI TITO) und in Stuttgart mit Peter Konwitschny (GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG, DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE), mit Jean Jourdheuil IDOMENEO und COSÌ FAN TUTTE und in Zusammenarbeit mit Nigel Lowery Lortzings WILDSCHÜTZ, sowie für eine Pariser SIMON BOCCANEGRA-Inszenierung des Regisseurs Johan Simons. In den letzten Jahren arbeitete er darüber hinaus wieder in Stuttgart für RIGOLETTO, FAUST, TRISTAN UND ISOLDE und FIDELIO, am Nationaltheater Mannheim für HERCULES und DIE MEISTERSINGER VON NÜRNBERG, am Klangforum Wien / Theater an der Wien für MONDPARSIFAL.
An der Deutschen Oper Berlin arbeitet er nun wieder an der Seite von Frank Castorf für dessen Inszenierung von LA FORZA DEL DESTINO.
