Kathrin Plath studierte Theaterwissenschaften, Kunstgeschichte und Politikwissenschaft. Von 1993 bis 1996 war sie als Kostümassistentin in der Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz in Berlin tätig und arbeitet seit 1997 als selbstständige Kostümbildnerin, unter anderem in den Münchner Kammerspielen, im Schauspielhaus Zürich, im Schauspielhaus Hamburg, am Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin, im Wiener Burgtheater und im Hamburger Thalia Theater, sowie an der Oper Basel und der Oper Frankfurt. Kathrin Plath entwirft kontinuierlich die Kostüme für die Inszenierungen von Jan Bosse.
