Der gebürtige Baseler Kaspar Zwimpfer studierte an der Fachhochschule für Kunst und Design Köln bei Prof. Rolf Glittenberg. Er begann seine Karriere in Luzern mit Bühnenbildern zu Opern Mozarts und Glucks. Früh schuf er eigene Bühnenbilder für Schauspiel und Musiktheater in Saarbrücken. Desweiteren entstanden Bühnenbilder zu Verdis „La traviata“ (Mainz 2004), Rossins „Guillaume Tell“ (Gelsenkirchen 2005), zu den Wiesbadener Ballettabenden „Professor Unrat“ und „Dornröschen“ (Choreographie: Stephan Thoss) und zu zahlreichen Schauspielproduktionen u.a. in Wien, Luzern, Göttingen und Oberhausen. Er kam dabei mit Regisseuren wie Andreas Baesler, Philipp Himmelmann, Tilmann Knabe und Peter Carp zusammen. Engagements führten ihn auch zum Mess Festival Sarajewo und ans Nationaltheater Ljubljana. Mit Immo Karaman entstanden an der Oper Leipzig und der Deutschen Oper am Rhein „The Turn of the Screw“ (Britten), „Von heute auf morgen“ (Schönberg), „La rondine“ (Puccini), „Figaros Hochzeit“ (Mozart) in Gelsenkirchen und „Death in Venice“ (Britten) am Gärtnerplatztheater München. Sein Bühnenbild zu Brittens „Peter Grimes wurde 2010 für den FAUST-Preis nominiert. Sein jüngstes Opernprojekt war „Fidelio“ (Beethoven) in Hamburg (Regie: Georges Delnon).
