Graham Smith, geboren 1972 in Cleveland, schloss sein Studium an der Idyllwild Arts Academy in Kalifornien und SUNY Purchase ab. Von 1994 bis 2006 war er als Tänzer und Choreograf in verschiedenen Theatern tätig. Von 2006 bis 2011 war er Mitgründer von pvc – Tanz Freiburg Heidelberg und des „Finkenschlags“ im Freiburger Stadtteil Haslach. Er arbeitete spartenübergreifend mit unterschiedlichen Regisseuren wie Volker Hesse, Philipp Becker, Tom Schneider oder Sebastian Nübling zusammen. Seit 2012/2013 ist er für den Jungen Tanz am Theater Freiburg verantwortlich. In diesem Rahmen konzeptioniert und leitete er das Bildungsreform-Projekt LEARNING BY MOVING. Seit mehreren Jahren leitet Smith außerdem generationsübergreifende Laientanz-Ensembles. Die SCHOOL OF LIFE AND DANCE recherchiert die eigene tänzerische Entwicklung und sucht nach neuen Produktionsformen. Smith war Leiter des Stadtraumprojekts DIE ANDERE SEITE, welches Formen des Zusammenlebens und des Stadtbaus in der Zukunft untersucht. 2015 war er Preisträger des SolidarEnergie Preises, 2020 des Reinhold-Schneider-Preises der Stadt Freiburg.
Graham Smith, born 1972 in Cleveland, studied Dance and Performance at the Idyllwild Arts Academy and the State University of New York at Purchase. Between 1994 and 2006 he was engaged in many different Theaters in Europe both as a dancer and Choreographer. 2006-2011 he was co-founder of pvc – Tanz Heidelberg Freiburg and the "Finkenschlag" in the Freiburg neighbourhood of Haslach. He worked inter-disciplinary with many different directors such as Volker Hesse, Philipp Becker, Tom Schneider, and Sebastian Nübling. Since 2012 Smith is director for Dance for Young Theater Freiburg where he founded an educational reform project called LEARNING BY MOVING. Smith also founded a multigenerational community dance project called SCHOOL OF LIFE AND DANCE. These five groups between the ages of 8 and 80 research dance development and new forms of theatrical production. Smith was also director of a city space project called THE OTHER SIDE which researched future forms of city planning, architecture, and ways of living together in the future. 2015 winner of the SolidarEnergie Prize and 2020 the Reinhold-Schneider-Award from the city of Freiburg.
