Die Mezzosopranistin Elissa Pfaender wurde kürzlich zur Gewinnerin der Opernstiftung 2023 ernannt, weil sie „in jedem Detail ihrer Körpersprache und Stimme Kraft ausstrahlt“. In der Spielzeit 2023/24 wird sie an der Deutschen Oper Berlin Waltraute / DIE WALKÜRE und Zweite Sekretärin / NIXON IN CHINA singen. Außerdem gehört sie zum Ensemble des Teatro Real, wo sie Maddalena / RIGOLETTO, Sofia / HALKA, Medoro / ORLANDO und Neris / MÉDÉE interpretieren wird.
In der vergangenen Saison kehrte sie für die Rolle der Mrs. McLean in SUSANNAH an das Opera Theatre of Saint Louis zurück und gab ihr Rollendebüt in der Titelrolle von CARMEN an der Opera North. Außerdem sang sie Zulma und übernahm die Titelrolle in L'ITALIANA IN ALGERI an der Tulsa Opera, sang Alisa in LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR an der New York City Opera und war Vocal Fellow am Ravinia Steans Music Institute, das mit einem Soloauftritt mit dem Chicago Symphony Orchestra in dessen „Tchaikovsky Spectacular“ unter Leitung von George Stelluto abschloss.
Als Gerdine Young Artist des Opera Theatre of Saint Louis sang sie die Rolle der Dr. Landau in der Weltpremiere von Tobias Pickers AWAKENINGS. Außerdem sang sie die Dritte Dame in DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE und verkörperte die Titelrolle in CARMEN. An der New York City Opera interpretierte sie die Rollen der Mama und der Signora Olga in der Weltpremiere von Ricky Ian Gordons THE GARDEN OF THE FINZI-CONTINIS und tritt mit dem Ensemble auch häufig als Solistin in Konzerten im Bryant Park und im Central Park auf.
Elissa Pfaender war auch „Young Artist“ beim Savannah Voice Festival unter der Leitung von Sherrill Milnes, beim Manchester Music Festival, bei der Sarasota Opera und bei der National Endowment for the Arts YoungArts Foundation. Während ihrer Zeit an der Sarasota Opera wurde sie von der Sarasota Opera Guild für ihr Talent, ihre Fähigkeiten und ihre Musikalität mit dem angesehenen „Anne J. O'Donnell Outstanding Apprentice Artist Award" ausgezeichnet. Sie gewann zahlreiche Preise von der Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition, der Gerda Lissner Foundation, der Opera Foundation, der NEA YoungArts Foundation, der National Opera Association und der Orpheus National Music Competition. Ihren Bachelor of Music absolvierte sie am renommierten Oberlin Conservatory of Music und ihren Master of Music am Westminster Choir College.
Elissa Pfaender bereichert in der Saison 2024/25 das Ensemble unseres Hauses als Stipendiatin der Opera Foundation New York.
