Claudius Wettstein wuchs in Freiburg auf. Er erhielt seinen ersten Cellounterricht mit vier Jahren bei seinem Vater, der Schüler des Casals-Assistenten Rudolf von Tobel war.

Claudius Wettstein wuchs in Freiburg auf. Er erhielt seinen ersten Cellounterricht mit vier Jahren bei seinem Vater, der Schüler des Casals-Assistenten Rudolf von Tobel war.
Während seiner Schulzeit war er Jungstudent an der Musikhochschule Freiburg bei Frau Prof. Adriana Contino. Nach dem Wehrdienst als Solocellist des Kammerorchesters der Bundeswehr studierte er an der Musikhochschule Saarbrücken bei David Grigorian und Mario Blaumer, und an der Musikhochschule Köln/Aachen bei Prof. Hans-Christian Schweiker, wo er 2003 sein künstlerisches Diplom mit "Sehr gut" ablegte.
Der hohe Stellenwert von Kammermusik und Kirchenmusik im familiären Alltag prägten ihn von Kind an. Mit jugendlichen Streichquartetten war er mehrfach Preisträger beim Bundeswettbewerb Jugend Musiziert und besuchte zahlreiche Meisterkurse.
Claudius Wettstein ist Spezialist für Barock-Cello. Lebenslang mit dem Continuospiel vertraut, hat er nach seinem Studium seine Kenntnisse in historischen Spieltechniken vertieft, zuletzt bei Werner Matzke von Concerto Köln.
Claudius Wettstein ist seit 2005 Mitglied des Sinfonieorchester Aachen. Er begann 2003 als Akademist im Hause.
