Der Bühnenbildner Bert Kistner wurde 1929 in Berlin geboren. Seine künstlerische Laufbahn begann nach dem Krieg in der DDR, wo er von 1946 bis 1952 an der Hochschule für bildende und angewandte Kunst Berlin arbeitete. 1952 bis 1954 war er am Mecklenburgischen Staatstheater Schwerin tätig, danach wechselte er an das Deutsches Theater Berlin, wo er bis 1958 im Festengagement war. Später arbeitete er für Schauspiel, Oper und Ballett vornehmlich an verschiedenen deutschen Theatern in Berlin, Heidelberg, Mainz, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf u.a. 1978 wurde er mit der Josef-Kainz-Medaille ausgezeichnet. Einige der von ihm ausgestatten Produktionen haben sich bis heute auf den Spielplänen gehalten, so „Der Rosenkavalier“ (Strauss) in der Regie von Otto Schenk und „La traviata“ (Verdi) in der Inszenierung von Axel Corti, die bis vor kurzem noch an der Oper Frankfurt zu erleben war.
