Geboren in Hagen, absolvierte Bernd Schindowski eine Lehre zum Bankkaufmann, bevor er von 1968-71 das Ballettstudium am Institut für Bühnentanz, Musikhochschule Köln, aufnahm. 1971 bis 1973 war er als Tänzer beim Tanzforum, Oper Köln, engagiert und arbeitete u.a. mit Choreografen wie Helmut Baumann, Jochen Ulrich, Kurt Jooss und Glen Tetley zusammen. 1973 bis 1975 studierte er Pädagogik für klassischen und modernen Tanz am Institut für Bühnentanz in Köln.Von 1975 bis 1978 folgte ein Engagement als Tänzer, Trainingsleiter und Choreograf am Ulmer Theater. Seit 1978 ist Bernd Schindowski Ballettdirektor am Musiktheater im Revier. Er choreografierte über 80 Ballette für Kinder, Jugendliche und Erwachsene. 1980 erhielt er den Förderpreis des Landes NRW für junge Künstler. Seit 1989 erhält das Ballett Schindowski vom Land NRW eine besondere finanzielle Förderung. Zu seinem 25. Jubiläum in der Spielzeit 2002/2003 erhielt Bernd Schindowski den Verdienstorden des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen sowie den Gelsenkirchner Theaterpreis.
