Bernd Künkele wurde 1964 in Kiel geboren und bekam seine Ausbildung bei Prof. Erich Penzel an der Musikhochschule Köln und bei Froydis Ree Wekre an der Hochschule Oslo. Nach seinem Diplom mit Auszeichnung wechselte er 1992 für einen anschließenden Aufbaustudiengang „Solistische Ausbildung“ an die Musikhochschule Frankfurt zu Prof. Marie-Luise Neunecker, den er 1996 mit dem Konzertexamen abschloss. Bernd Künkele war u.a. Preisträger des Internationalen Wettbewerbs »Città di Porcia« 1991, des Deutschen Hochschulwettbewerbs 1992 und des Internationalen Instrumentalwettbewerbs Markneukirchen 1994. Im gleichen Jahr wurde ihm der Eduard-Söring-Preis verliehen. Seit 1992 ist er Solohornist der Philharmoniker Hamburg, außerdem spielte er 1998 bis 2001 und 2008/2009 im Orchester der Bayreuther Festspiele.
