Ania Michaelis ist in Ostwestfalen geboren. Nach dem Abitur spielt sie in Westberliner Off-Theater-Produktionen und im Tempodrom Kinderzirkus. Sie ist von Jerzy Grotowskis Arbeit fasziniert, von Ariane Mnouchkine und Berthold Brecht. Sie findet eine zeitgemäße, körperbetonte Ausbildung in der Schweiz bei Jolanda Rodio, die sich Zeit ihres Lebens mit dem Zusammenhang von Stimme und Bewegung befasste. Michaelis studiert von 1983 bis 1988 an Rodios Schule „Totales Theater“. Danach spielt sie an deutschen Stadttheatern. Im Herbst 1989 kehrt sie nach Berlin zurück. Seit 1999 inszeniert sie. Ihre Arbeiten werden auf nationale und Internationale Festivals geladen und ausgezeichnet. Von 2009 bis 2011 leitete sie das Theater o.N. in Berlin und war von 2011 bis 2015 Oberspielleiterin für die Sparten Schauspiel und Puppenspiel am theater junge generation Dresden. Seit August 2015 ist Ania Michaelis wieder freischaffend tätig.
