Schon früh wurden seine Werke ausgezeichnet, u. a. mit dem Studienpreis der Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung München, dem Jacob-Burckhardt-Preis der Johann-Wolfgang-von-Goethe-Stiftung in Basel sowie dem Alexander-Clavel-Preis Riehen. Seine Stücke wurden uraufgeführt u. a. bei den Salzburger Osterfestspielen, dem Lucerne Festival oder den Internationalen Ferienkursen für Neue Musik Darmstadt. 2004 war Scartazzini Composer in residence an der Uni Witten Herdecke, 2011 Gast im Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai, 2012/2013 Stipendiat am Internationalen Künstlerhaus Villa Concordia in Bamberg. Schwerpunkte seiner Arbeit sind die Opern WUT (Erfurt 2006, Bern 2010) und DER SANDMANN (Basel 2012, Frankfurt 2016). EDWARD II. ist seine dritte Oper.
