Alexander Puschkin wurde 1799 in Moskau geboren und gilt als Begründer der neueren russischen Literatursprache. Nach Abschluss des Lyzeums trat er 1817 in den Staatsdienst ein, wurde aber wegen seiner satirischen und politischen Gedichte 1820 nach Südrussland versetzt. Von 1824–26 lebte er in der Verbannung auf dem elterlichen Gut bei Pskow. Nach dem Tod des Zaren Alexander I. begnadigt, kehrte Puschkin 1825 nach Moskau und Sankt Petersburg zurück – sein Leben und Wirken unterlagen jedoch stets strenger Überwachung und Zensur. Eines seiner bedeutendsten Werke ist das Versepos »Eugen Onegin«, das er 1830 vollendete. Auch die romantische Novelle »Pique Dame« (1834) und »Die Hauptmannstochter« (1836), einer der ersten russischen Prosaromane, erlangten großen Ruhm. Puschkin starb 1837 in Sankt Petersburg an den Folgen einer Schussverletzung, die er während eines Duells erlitten hatte.
