Der gebürtige Norweger studierte u. a. an der Kunstschule Kolding in Dänemark, an der Staatlichen Handwerks- und Kunstindustrieschule Oslo und der norwegischen Staatlichen Kunstakademie. Noch während seiner Ausbildung entstand die Ausstattung von „Dagen vender“ am Norwegischen Nationaltheater. Er vertrat Norwegen 1999 auf der Internationalen Quadriennale in Prag mit seinem Bühnenbild zu „Fuglane“. Mit Ole Anders Tandberg verbindet ihn eine langjährige künstlerische Partnerschaft. Mittlerweile hat Erlend Birkeland nahezu hundert Inszenierungen in Norwegen, Schweden und Dänemark ausgestattet, hauptsächlich für das Schauspiel, aber auch zunehmend für Oper und Musiktheater. So zeichnete er z. B. 2010 an der Komischen Oper Berlin für das Bühnenbild von Händels ORLANDO verantwortlich.
