Erstes Engagement am Schauspielhaus Bochum unter Claus Peymann. 1982 wechselt er zum Deutschen Schauspielhaus Hamburg, wo er 14 Jahre Ensemblemitglied ist und mit Regisseuren wie Peter Zadek, Dimiter Gotscheff und Frank Castorf arbeitet. Er gastiert u.a. am Schlossparktheater Berlin, im St. Pauli Theater Hamburg, an den Münchner Kammerspielen, am Berliner Ensemble und bei den Salzburger Festspielen. Gustav Peter Wöhler arbeitet zudem in Film- und Fernsehproduktionen mit Regisseuren wie Fatih Akin, Doris Dörrie und Werner Herzog. Neben seiner Tätigkeit als Schauspieler tritt er regelmäßig als Sänger mit seiner Band auf.
Zur Zeit ist Gustav Peter Wöhler am Deutschen SchauSpielHaus Hamburg in »Die Rasenden« und »Die Orestie« (Die Rasenden II) zu sehen.
