Noch während des Studiums spielt er die Hauptrolle in Hans-Christian Schmids Kinofilm »23«, für den er 1999 mit dem Deutschen Filmpreis als bester Hauptdarsteller und dem Bayerischen Filmpreis als bester Nachwuchsdarsteller ausgezeichnet wird. 1998 spielt August Diehl in Peter Zadeks »Gesäubert«-Inszenierung an den Hamburger Kammerspielen, die auch bei den Wiener Festwochen zu sehen war. 2000 reüssiert er am Wiener Burgtheater als Kostja in »Die Möwe« (Regie: Luc Bondy), wofür er den Alfred-Kerr-Darstellerpreis erhält. Am Deutschen Schauspielhaus in Hamburg ist er erstmals 2003 als Don Carlos in Laurent Chétouanes gleichnamiger Schiller Inszenierung zu sehen. Im selben Jahr dreht er die Kinofilme »Was nützt die Liebe in Gedanken« (Regie: Achim von Borries), und »Birkenau und Rosenfels« (Regie: Marceline Loridan-Ivens), im Jahr darauf »Der Neunte Tag«. 2004 spielt er Ferdinand in der Schiller-Verfilmung von »Kabale und Liebe« (Regie: Leander Haußmann). Im Deutschen Schauspielhaus in Hamburg ist er als Strasser in »Zur schönen Aussicht« zu sehen.
