Ed Atkins lebt und arbeitet in Kopenhagen. Zu den jüngsten institutionellen Einzelausstellungen gehören „Refuse“ im Tank, Shanghai (2022), „Get Life / Love's Work“ im New Museum, New York (2021) sowie Ausstellungen im Kunsthaus Bregenz und K21 Düsseldorf (beide 2019), im Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin, im MMK Frankfurt und DHC/ART in Montréal (alle 2017), im Castello di Rivoli und in der Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin, in The Kitchen New York im SMK Kopenhagen (alle 2016), im Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (2015), in The Serpentine Gallery London (2014), in der Julia Stoschek Collection Düsseldorf (2013) und bei MoMA PS1 (2012). Atkins nahm an der 56. und 58. Biennale von Venedig, der 13. Biennale von Lyon und den Performa 13 und 19 teil.
Eine Anthologie von Atkins Texten, „A Primer for Cadavers“, wurde 2016 von Fitzcarraldo veröffentlicht, und 2017 erschien eine umfangreiche Künstlermonografie von Skira. Ein epischer Monolog, „Old Food“, wurde 2019 von Fitzcarraldo veröffentlicht, und 2021 erschien ein Buch mit Atkins' Zeichnungen für Kinder bei Koenig Books. „Sorcerer“, das er zusammen mit Steven Zultanski geschrieben und inszeniert hat, wurde im März 2022 im Teater Revolver in Kopenhagen aufgeführt.
Im Jahr 2025 wird Ed Atkins seine bisher größte Einzelausstellung in der Tate Britain präsentieren und im April erscheint bei Fitzcarraldo Editions ein Buch mit Geständnissen, „Flower“.
