Julia Hansen, in Hamburg geboren, ist als freischaffende Bühnen- und Kostümbildnerin im In- und Ausland tätig.
Ihre Arbeiten sind an den führenden internationalen Opernhäusern und Festivals vertreten. So führte sie ihre letzten Engagements u.a. an das Teatro Real Madrid (ACHILLE IN SCIRO), das Theater an der Wien (CASTOR ET POLLUX und FAIRY QUEEN), Théâtre des Champs Élysées in Paris (IL RITORNO D’ULISSE IN PATRIA), die Semperoper Dresden (DIE VERKAUFTE BRAUT), die Opéra Garnier Paris (HÄNSEL UND GRETEL), zu den Bregenzer Festspielen (DON QUICHOTTE), nach Santiago de Chile (LULU), an das Royal Opera House London (L' ETOILE) und an das Aaltotheater Essen (LE GRAND MACABRE und SALOME). Seit 2004 verbindet sie eine enge Zusammenarbeit mit der französisch-iranischen Regisseurin Mariame Clément.
Die mehrfache Preisträgerin wurde zuletzt vom französischen Kritikerverband für ihre Ausstattung für PLATÉE an der Ópéra National du Rhin/Strasbourg mit dem 1. Preis für das beste Bühnen- und Kostümbild des Jahres ausgezeichnet.
Von 2007 bis 2011 ist Julia Hansen Ausstattungsleiterin am Stadttheater Bern, wo sie neben Musiktheater auch zahlreiche Tanzaufführungen für internationale Choreografen ausstattet.
2013 lud das Deutsche Hygiene Museum Dresden sie die Ausstellung „Leidenschaften“ zu gestalten.
Außerdem arbeitete sie am Staatstheater Dresden (OTHELLO / Regie: Thorleifur Örn Arnasson) und am Parco-Theater in Tokio (MARY STUART / Regie: Max Webster). Regelmäßig arbeitet sie an der Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg, dort stattete sie BARKOUF, LA CALISTO, DAS LIEBESVERBOT, DER ROSENKAVALIER, WERTHER, LA BELLE HÉLÈNE, PLATÉE sowie DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE aus, die anschließend auch in Nizza, Graz und Köln aufgeführt wurde. Zu den weiteren Arbeiten gehören an der Vlaamse Opera GIASONE, IL VIAGGIO A REIMS, AGRIPPINA und ARMIDA sowie DON PASQUALE und POLIUTO für das Glyndebourne Festival.
Zukünftige Projekte werden sie nach Genf, Malmö, Paris, Santa Fe und Glyndebourne führen.
