Seit 1967 spielt er in verschiedenen Ensembles, unter anderem in Kassel, Wiesbaden, Karlsruhe und Freiburg, später in Mannheim und am schauspielfrankfurt. Von 1992 bis 2000 gehört er fest zum Ensemble des Schauspielhauses Bochum – erst bei Frank-Patrick Steckel, dann bei Leander Haußmann. Er arbeitet mit Regisseuren wie Frank-Patrick Steckel, Leander Haußmann, Jürgen Kruse, Dimiter Gottscheff, Armin Petras und Roger Vontobel, jetzt wieder am Schauspielhaus Bochum.
Am Deutschen SchauSpielHaus Hamburg spielt Heiner Stadelmann in Markus Bothes Inszenierung »König Artus« den Merlin.
