Germany is at a turning point: the baby boomers are reaching retirement age and the associated demographic changes are presenting the country with unforeseen challenges. However, the young generation that will soon be taking on responsibility is a minority whose reality is characterised by educational inequality and the constant feeling of being politically overlooked and socially neglected. For children and young people, the state of crisis has become the norm.Aladin El Mafaalani, Professor of Sociology of Migration and Education at TU Dormund and recipient of the Federal Cross of Merit, observes that an ageing society is neither child-friendly nor fair to children. He calls for a rethink: children must be moved from their position as outsiders to the centre of political and social thinking, not just as a moral obligation, but as an essential necessity for a future worth living and the sustainability of society.
