What makes us so angry?
“I associate anger with my spine. I store it there so I can let it explode.” Anger is often seen as undesirable: Be constructive. Be polite. Stay solution-oriented.
Those who are angry cross boundaries. And are often punished for it. As a result, anger is frequently directed inward, leading to self-harm, exhaustion, or depression. Yet it holds enormous power. Especially in its most radical form RAGE it can be liberating and deeply vital.
Based on conversations with young people in Mülheim, a solo performance has emerged that explores RAGE as both a physical and social state. What drives us into a rage? When does anger silence us, and when does it make us speak out? When is anger contagious, and when is it repulsive? When does it connect us? And when does it isolate us? What political, social, and personal forces lie within it?
In this performative experiment, an intimate space emerges in which we, as the audience, expose ourselves to this state and voluntarily surrender to its hold: a space where RAGE is not merely recounted, but where it can be intensely experienced.
Here, RAGE appears as an alternative to lethargy and indifference: as a rebellious, defiant force that can destroy, but also bring about change. What happens when we no longer suppress our anger, but instead listen to it?
“The truth will set you free, but first it’ll piss you off.” — Gloria Steinem
