Perro

original Spanish, English, Miskito version with English subtitles available

Synopsis

Perro and his grandmother fear for their homeland in southern Nicaragua, an area which is threatened by the planned construction of the 300-km-long 'El Gran Canal'. The documentary accompanies the silent and nature-loving boy amidst the inevitable farewell to his old life in the jungle and his new beginnings in the city. (PR Berlinale)

Perro recounts the coming-of-age story of young Perro (12), whose life in the traditional indigenous community of Bangkukuk is being threatened by the mega-project "El Gran Canal". Perro loves his homeland, the Nicaraguan jungle, just as he loves his grandmother Miss Charyl, who raised him. But since the village community voted against the canal, the government is putting pressure on it to force the necessary approval to start construction. When then the village teacher is withdrawn, Perro is forced to leave his grandmother and his home in order to visit the school in the city.
But there people place high hopes in the Canal, so Perro is forced to develop an attitude to the events, as well as to ask himself how he wants to live in the future.
