The filmmaker Andreas and his sister Vanessa find previously unknown letters of their deceased mother Natalia. They never really got to know her mother due to her early death. The words Natalia once wrote to her parents in the Russian industry city of Orsk open a small window in time and space – a second chance to listen to her. In her early 20s, Natalia immigrated to Germany where she was hoping to find a better life. But reality turned out to be different. For Vanessa and Andreas their mother becomes real again – somewhere between her letters, the empty steppe of Orsk, and the grandparents they grew up with.
