Disco

A disco dancer becomes the victim of her manipulative family and their fundamentalist church. A skilful psychogram of a right-wing sect.

Synopsis

Mirjam is a disco and freestyle dance champion. But behind the sparkling façade is an insecure and tormented young woman. Mirjam, her mother, and her stepfather Per are members of a fundamentalist church that uses pop culture to bring people onto the path to Jesus. They also force homosexuals to undergo “cures”. Mirjam believes she was sexually abused by her biological father, and is unable to deal with the moral constraints of the community. After she has a breakdown during a competition, her stepfather puts even more pressure on her. Mirjam feels like a loser and a sinner … Using unusual cinematic techniques, director Jorunn Myklebust Syversen pulls her audience into the manipulative world of religious evangelists. In long drawn-out scenes, she creates an oppressive, threatening atmosphere that holds us in thrall with its immediacy.
